October's rolling in, and it's giving me all the cozy feels. Lately, I’ve been winding down each night with Beth Kempton’s Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life.Just a few pages at a time.
Beth talks about her time in Japan and the whole idea of wabi sabi—finding beauty in the simple, imperfect parts of life. It’s about embracing the changes, letting go of perfection, and just enjoying the moment as it comes. Messy or not, there’s always something to appreciate.
“Wabi sabi is a state of the heart. It is a deep in-breath and a slow exhale.” Beth Kempton -page 5
I've already added her newest book, KOKORO, to my wish list.
— Spicy Carrot and Lentil Soup. This soup is total comfort food and so simple. Just rinse the red lentils (no soaking, thank goodness) and you’re on your way. Fresh ginger gives it a perfect little kick, not too spicy, just right. Add some crusty bread for dipping and maybe a glass of wine, and you’re all set.
(I always triple the recipe—leftovers get tastier each day.)
Wine Tip: Pair it with a German Riesling if you want a sweet balance, or a dry Californian Chardonnay if you’re feeling fancy. And don't forget to chill your Rock Bottom Decanter, then let the wine breathe before pouring. It makes a difference, I promise.
If you’re wanting to add a bit of movement, I’ve been hooked on the Down Dog yoga app. You can customize everything—I’ve been doing 15-minute sessions, because who doesn’t have that? You can set your level, pick your style—I’ve been into Gentle 2 at the 'Old' beginner level 2 lately (yes, for real, there's an 'Old Beginner' level). After 13 years of working with concrete, my body definitely feels those repetitive motions. Taking a bit of time each morning for yoga has helped me get some flexibility back and ease the joint pain.
So here’s to savouring the imperfect moments, warming up with some yummy soup, and fitting in a little self care.
